There are more than 2.9 million registered nurses in the country, making nursing the largest healthcare profession. Nurses work in their discount urbane scrubs wherever people need care: in hospitals, schools, homes, community centers, workplaces, homeless shelters, children's camp, retirement communities, and so on. A little over 50% of registered nurses work in hospitals and the rest work in various settings. An estimate of 14.9% work in public health or community health, 11.5% in ambulatory care, 6.3% in nursing homes, and 2.6% in nursing education. Hospital unit settings are also varied including emergency rooms, intensive care, operating room, recovery room, step-down, outpatient units, a labor and delivery. Full-time staff nurses who work in hospitals have a median salary of about $56,880. Indeed, nursing is a very attractive career option, especially since it is predicted that there will be an increasing demand for nurses in the next 20 years; but still, it is not for everyone.

What makes a good nurse?

Before considering a career in nursing, you should assess yourself and determine if nursing is right for you-if you have the personality, skills, and ability to be a nurse. If you are naturally compassionate, love helping other people, and really want to make a difference in other people's lives then this line of work is perfect for you. It will also help a good deal if you are hardworking, passionate, and analytical-particularly if you pay attention to small details to get some clues about a person's general behavior, then nursing is a very viable career path for you.

What sucks about being a nurse?

Nursing is a high-intensity job where there is little to no idle time. For those who are easily stressed, they might experience burn-out early and be unable to handle the pressures of the job. Because there is a shortage of nurses, all nursing staff are maximized and utilized to the full of their abilities. As a nurse, you will be working in odd hours and assigned various shifts. Your schedule will be erratic and it could mean a significant decrease in your social life. You will be likely working during hours when your friends of family are off work. You may also be required to work weekends, week nights, and holidays. Even if you have a 40-hour workweek, you may not see your friends, family, spouse, or lover, that much. Also, nurses are usually requested even pressured to work over-time especially when there are too many patients and new admissions. Another downside is that you will be working in an environment that can generally be depressing. You will be surrounded with sick or dying people and their aggrieved families. Needless to say, a hospital environment can be high on emotions. You need to be able to deal with serious issues and communicating these with other people without breaking down.

Compensation

One of the best things about being a nurse is that you are compensated well for your hard work and efforts. The average compensation for registered nurses is between $43,000 and $63,000 per year, while the top 10% of high-paid nurses are earning more than $75,000 per year.

Nursing is a very stressful, hectic, and intense job; it is no wonder that a lot of new nurses get burned out easily. There are a lot of things that adds to the stressfulness of the hospital environment, particularly the nursing job, such as hospital protocol, staffing shortages, corporate rules, unpleasant co-workers, unreasonable superiors, competitiveness, clashing egos, insecurities, lack of sleep, and lack of confidence. For the new nurse in discount urbane scrubs, it can be impossible to handle the overwhelming pressures and stresses that come with the job and it is easy to feel miserable within a few months or a year's time. Feeling disillusioned is a common reaction for the newbie where they start hating work and dread waking up everyday and going to the hospital. It is as if their only sustenance has become waiting for the paycheck. In no time, misery leads to depression and depression leads to fatigue and illness and the feeling that you need to quit to get your life back. This is what 'burnout' is.

One way to overcome burnout is to treat it like any other illness. And like any other illness, the first step to treating it is to recognize what it is and make an assessment and diagnosis. This means that the first step to cure burnout is to recognize that you have burnout. You need to have self-awareness. Some symptoms of burnout include feeling that every day is a bad day, feeling bored all the time, not caring about your work anymore and feel that it's waste of time to think about it, feeling exhausted all the time, and spending your time on tasks that you find mind-numbingly dull or too overwhelming, and feeling that anything that you do will make no difference and will go unappreciated. Burnout from work also usually spills out into your personal life and home life. It can also lower your immune system and make you susceptible to flu, headaches, or a cold.

Once you have made a diagnosis of yourself and have confirmed that you are indeed experiencing burnout, it's time to act on it to reverse its effects. To battle the symptoms, you have to work on your mental and physical state. You can feel and be more energetic by taking up a physical exercise, specifically cardio. You can try jogging to work or signing up for a Pilates, yoga, aerobics, or dancing class. All of these will help you breathe better, make your blood circulate better, and strengthen your immune system. Eating healthy will also contribute to a healthy body. And as you've learned, a healthy body affects a healthy mind.

Making changes in your routine is one way to break the dull and mundane cycle of your daily work. You can start with little changes such as eating in a different place or ordering other types of food that you don't usually order. Try to be a bit more adventurous! Listening to music is also very therapeutic. You can listen to ambient music during your break times, or on your way home, or before going to bed. These are just some examples for battling burnout. Reading poetry, being inspired by art, finding beauty in humanity-all these are tools for making you love yourself and your work again.

A job interview can be a very daunting experience for anyone, whether you're an aspiring programmer, writer, or a nurse. Yes, those who are looking for healthcare positions after graduating from nursing school still need to pass one last test-and that is the job interview itself. Fortunately for you, this short guide on how to ace a nursing job interview will prepare you for the kinds of questions and situations you are likely to encounter.
<br/>

Similar to any other job interview, you will be asked to take part in a competency-based interview, where a series of questions will explore your skills, qualifications and experience. In most cases, the questions will be fielded in by an individual, or a panel representing the healthcare facility.

At this point, we'll break down the common questions that will be asked during the interview into four categories namely:

Training and Qualifications

Under this category, expect questions that will look at your clinical effectiveness, understanding of governance, and knowledge regarding medical terminology.

Working Experience

Be sure to explain in detail your previous working experience as shown on your CV. Don't forget to mention the short stint you had working at a small, local clinic with discount urbane scrubs. Remember, the more experience you have, the better your chances of securing a nursing job.

Core Competencies

The category relates to the required skills as a healthcare professional. This may include your ability to work in or manage a team and your ability to have good time management. Let's not forget your capacity to demonstrate effective communication and patient care skills. These skills will ultimately help you land a nursing a job, backed by good application of technical medical knowledge.

Personality

Character weighs greatly, as far as employers are concerned. For this reason, you have to know how to behave in this kind of working environment-especially when dealt with difficult situations such as loss of patient's life. So aside from stating your reasons for applying and choosing your area of specialization, make sure that you express your willingness to learn new things, ability to work within a team, and eagerness to give the best patient care possible.

In most cases, an interviewer will give three to four questions on each area. Be sure to answer them briefly and truthfully. See if you can practice answering these questions so that you will feel comfortable during the actual interview.

Interview the Interviewer

Of course, all the questioning doesn't have to come from the interviewer. In order to express your interest, make sure that you ask your employer several questions pertaining to the position available. It would be wise to ask your employer regarding the scheduling process, the nurse/patient ratio, the primary challenges of the position, and similar topics. Aside from showing your interest, asking such questions will basically give you an idea of what it is like working for them.

Keep in mind that hundreds of other nurses are likely competing with you for the same position. So to ace the interview, familiarize yourself with the possible questions, practice answering them, and get that nursing job with confidence.

Nursing is one of the hottest jobs today and is expected to be so for the next ten to twenty years. Why is this? Primarily because baby boomers in the United States (or the world, for that matter) are aging and they are living longer because of increasing medical advancements and technologies. There is a shortage of nurses today and the increasing demand will only exacerbate this shortage. Those who are earning their nursing degrees can be assured or of a long-term and high-paying job well into the future.

Factors contributing to the nursing shortage

Aside from the aging population and increase in medical advancements, the factors contributing to the nursing shortage is the fact that enrollment in nursing schools is not growing fast enough to meet the demand. Also, there is a limited nursing faculty. Because there are fewer new nurses every year, the average age of currently working registered nurses is climbing (which is about 45). Ten years from now, a lot of these nurses will be retiring and new nurses are needed to fill their positions. In a study published in the journal Nursing Economics, it was reported that the shortage of nurses is negatively affecting the healthcare goals set by the National Quality Forum and the Institute of Medicine because it undermines the quality of patient care.

How the nursing shortage is being addressed

There is a lot of concern about the nursing shortage and the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) is trying to address this crisis by working with schools, the media, policy makers, and other organizations. Beginning 2005, the AACN implemented strategies such as statewide initiatives to encourage practicing nurses to go back to school and earn graduate or advanced degrees to teach the next generation of student nurses. Universities and nursing colleges also formed partnerships and sought private support to increase student capacity in nursing schools. The US Department of Labor also did its share by awarding more than $12 million in grants through the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative. Of the $12 million, $3 million will go to address the shortage of nursing faculty.

Online nursing programs made available

To make it easier for aspiring nurses and to accommodate more nursing students, a lot of universities and schools are offering online programs. Schools such as Kaplan University, South University, and University of Phoenix have developed high-quality distance learning programs. Not only is it cheaper compared to traditional nursing education, but those who have part-time or full-time jobs or family obligations can also take advantage of this opportunity. Learning online offers many benefits, chief of them is the convenience of choosing when to hear lectures and when to do school work and assignments. However, not because it is a virtual classroom doesn't mean it's a lot easier or takes less time to finish. Courses, modules and lessons follow the traditional lessons and only differ in delivery and medium. Online learning is also not for everyone.
Help answer the question about urban jobs

Types of jobs and salary ranges for those with a Master's in Urban Planning?
I am in my first semester of my MBA program and have been toying with the idea of switching it to a MUP. I am wondering what the average starting salary is for a MUP and how many job opportunities are available within the industry.

Is it financially worth it for me to switch? Will I be forgoing that many more job opportunities?

Cheers
