So you have landed a new job and anxious to get started building your new career in new company. Once you get over your new employee fears and get oriented to your new space, you will find it takes more than smiles and kind words to fit in.

Here are few things to keep in mind as you make the transition.

Don't whine. At least not to the people you work with at the office. Talk about any job challenges or work related issues with friends, family or trusted colleagues in other companies, and not with your new coworkers. Avoid complaining about too much work, too many assignments or too long hours at the office. The fact is, no one really cares how much you have to do since everyone else has their own work, their own assignments, and their own long hours as well. Avoid becoming too cozy with the resident whiners in your new company as well.

Make your manager aware of what you are doing and ask for feedback. A colleague once talked to me about a new energetic recruit who showed a lot of initiative on the job. Although this new worker meant really well, as my colleague put it, "She was running a great race, but she was in the wrong stadium completely." Make sure the work you are doing is relevant and critical to the mission. Additionally, make sure your work is being noticed. It will take a while for you to get into your groove in your new office, and making sure you are not working contrary to the flow is good. Watch also that you are not inheriting assignments from those who want to hand off their jobs.

Show enthusiasm and energy for the job, business or industry you are in now. If you just got hired by the largest plumbing fixture manufacturing supply company, you need to get excited about plumbing fixture manufacturing supplies. People who enjoy the domains they work in are interested in learning more and will ultimately tend to do better on the job. If you are not prepared to have meaningful conversations about your job or the industry within which your company operates, you will not be happy.

Stay on time. If you have a problem being punctual, work really hard to correct that behavior. Be in the office on time, if not early, be back from lunch on time and do not pack up twenty minutes before your shift or day is supposed to end. Arrive on time for meetings and work harder on your own time if you have to. Of course today's workforce is more about productivity than time spent in the office, but it is still a good idea for to show others you respect their time.

Limit talk about what you did in your old job, company or worse in a class. This one is pretty hard to do, but it is something you will master eventually. It is been my experience that people sometimes don't want to hear new ideas if they came from your old job, old company or worse from a class. Of course your prior knowledge will show in your work, but limit talking about where your skills come from. You can credit publications, the media or a conference, but not your old job, company or class for new ideas.

Of course none of these tips are cast in cement. In addition to the requisite due diligence to do your new job well, you just need to heed some of these other workplace protocols that will expedite or slow your assimilation in the new environment.

One of the biggest struggles I had in starting my business was actually coming up with the idea. I wanted something that was scalable as well as needed in our society. I combed through hundreds of ideas before settling on my current venture. Through this discovery period, I uncovered what I believe are the five most important concepts in determining what makes the perfect business idea.

So, what is a perfect idea? Each individual entrepreneur has their concept of the perfect business. While Google is a great business for the founders of that company it may not be a great business for others that are non-tech savvy or who do not want to run such a large organization.

Therefore, each perfect business is defined by the business owners. Keeping this in mind, lets start on my five concepts of finding the perfect business:

Number One - Understanding your customer: This might seem strange to start here as how do you know your customers before you have a business idea in place. The answer is simple your customers make the business, therefore without customers there is no business. If you have a business idea dont try to develop the idea around what YOU think potential customers will like or need, but find out what your customers actually desire. Too often business owners get an idea in their head and jump right in with both feet. However, they soon find out that their target market does not want what they are offering. Spending both time and money on a project just to see it languish is not the perfect business idea.

Moreover, lets say you dont already have an idea getting out and understand consumers (those who will eventually become your customers) may lead you to the perfect idea. Knowing what potential consumers need and building products to meets those needs will get customers beating a path to your door that is a perfect business idea.

Number Two Passion: Passion here does not mean being fanatical about your product or service. But, it does mean having some interest in what you do. More times than not, you will be spending 15 to 18 hours a day working on your business in the beginning usually for the first 12 to 18 months (more like 2 years in this economy). You have to constantly be thinking about ways to improve and grow your business as well as be out talking about it to everyone, everywhere. If you end up starting a venture that you dont have passion for, something that does not make you jump out of bed each morning, it will be very hard to put in the hours and energy to make it successful thus not a perfect business idea.

Number Three - Understand Your Competition: Every business has competition either direct or indirect. Think about movie theaters. They have direct competition from video rental stores or at home television. They also have indirect competition from any other activity that consumers spend their disposable income on like bowling, paint ball, golf, etc. Anything that people do in their spare time.

Further, some competitors are ruthless. Meaning that if you promote and offer a product that is similar to theirs but at a lower price, these competitors will just lower their price to match or beat you. If they are already established businesses they may be able to undercut your price enough to drive you out of business.

If you dont know your competition what they are willing to do to keep you out of their market you may be spending more of your time in a pricing war then growing your business not the perfect business idea.

Number Four - Cash Flow: Lots of entrepreneurs enter the business world with great ideas but very poor understanding of the capital it will take to get their venture off the ground. Most will prototype their product or service and understand what it takes to make the product or provide the service but they dont understand the capital it takes to manage the rest of the organization including marketing (very expensive but extremely necessary), employees (more than just salaries or wages), insurance or supplies and all the little miscellaneous expenses that add up very quickly like phone, internet, computer services, etc. Knowing your total cash flow will help ensure that all of your costs (variable and fixed) can be covered by the business the perfect business idea. I have seen way too many businesses with great products fail because they could not cover simple expenses like rent or utilities.

Number Five You: Know who you are. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know that you are ready, willing and able to do what it takes to make your venture a success. I have worked with many business owners in the past that think all they have to do is hang out their shingle and they have it made. Thus, when it comes down to actually running the business day-to-day they are unwilling to invest the time, energy or money necessary for success. Thus, know how hard you are willing to work.

Moreover, know your personal financial situation and what you need the business to generate to cover your lifestyle. If you think your business will pay you a great salary from day one - it will not. And, if you need it to, it is not the perfect business idea for you. Take away outside distractions like your personal financial situation get those in order thus, when your business concept does materialize you will be able to solely focus on its conception and growth. In the end providing you the financial security you are seeking - it will be the perfect business idea.

Regardless of the level of your desire for your business a lifestyle mom and pop operation or a multi-national conglomerate if you develop a business idea with these five concepts in mind your idea will be the perfect business idea for you.

You need to put your best foot forward your new place of employment. Let's take a look at how you can do this.

Learning a New Job

You have to learn a new job and new procedures. Some of it may be explained to you, but the rest is for you to tackle or attempt to learn from the colleagues around you. Take care how you ask, respond and also handle the job.

It is better to ask lots of questions than to make a mistake.

Short Notes

Do not hesitate to make notes. You may need to operate a machine or a particular program, and you may not be able to remember everything the first time. It is better to take down details than to keep asking and disturbing your colleagues when they are working.

Make notes on whatever else you may be told or are learning about the organization.

Be True To Your Work

Don't be tempted to check your mail or surf the 'net when the work at hand has not been completed. If you find yourself with time on your hands, look into material that will educate you about your organization and job.

Keep Your Cell Phone in Silence Mode

Respect your colleagues by keeping your cell phone on silent mode and keep your voice down when answering it. Some organizations do not allow employees to answer their mobiles during working hours. Be sure to find out what the company's policies are regarding personal messaging devices.

Respond to calls on your own time. Nothing gets an employee an unfavorable reputation faster than spending a lot of company time on personal tasks like phone calls.

Complete the Work Given

Every attempt should be made to complete the work assigned to you. Always having to apologize for not completing jobs is damaging to your reputation as an employee - both with fellow employees and your supervisor.

If you feel you are being given more than you can complete, then you should discuss it with your superiors.

Be Attentive

Listening and observing helps you learn more than talking or interrupting the person who is speaking. You will learn more about company matters and policies and the work culture and flow by listening to your colleagues.

Be Positive

Being positive and enthusiastic will showcase your attitude toward your work and workplace. Show your eagerness about the work being explained to you and your confidence that you can handle it.

Gain Respect

It is important for you to earn the respect of your colleagues by speaking to them courteously. If you show respect for them, they are more likely to reciprocate.

Be a Part of the Team

Most work is carried out by teams, not individually. Make sure that you show you are part of the team and support it. You will need that support from them at some point. Always be humble and polite.

Taking on a new job is not easy. You need to work hard at two things simultaneously: you need to learn a new job and you need to make a good impression. Be friendly and you'll settle in well with your new employer.

After buying their first home, Debra Cohen and her husband faced the unenviable chore of finding reliable home improvement contractors. Fed up with blindly picking names from the Yellow Pages and waiting for contractors who didn't show up, it occurred to Cohen that if she and her husband were having trouble finding contractors, other homeowners in their community must be facing a similar predicament. This bleak reality sparked the creation of a unique service that has since expanded into a profitable cottage industry across the U.S. and internationally.

After extensive conversations with lawyers, business consultants, contractors and insurance agents, Cohen, 38, started Hewlett, New York-based Home Remedies of NY Inc. from her home in February 1997. This stay-at-home mom used a $5,000 loan, a computer and a refurbished fax machine to launch her part-time business. Right away, the response from homeowners was tremendous, and after three months in business, she repaid her loan. Her gross earnings in the first year were almost $30,000.

Today, Home Remedies is a contractor referral service that matches home-owners with reliable home-repair workers. The appeal to customers is that the company takes on the time-consuming task of locating and screening qualified contractors, checking to make sure they're adequately insured and licensed, and serving as a liaison between the contractor and the homeowner throughout the course of a job. Home Remedies provides a win-win situation for both parties: Services are provided free of charge to the homeowner, and contractors represented by Home Remedies only pay a commission for any work they secure.

At first, Cohen worked approximately 15 hours to 20 hours per week; she now works about 30 hours per week. Last year, sales for Home Remedies exceeded $100,000. Cohen earns additional income by selling manuals and packages on how to get started in the referral business.

It has been reported that unemployment in the UK rose by 131,000 to 1.92 million between September and November which is the highest amount since 1997. This figure does not included job cuts since November and with the current economic turmoil things are expected to get worst before they get better.

Job cuts have unfortunately hit women nearly double the rate of men as many job losses have taken place in the Retail and Hospitality sector where there tends to be more women then men working.

There are new opportunities coming up within the large supermarkets chains. Tescos plan to create 10,000 new jobs this year with new stores that are to be opened. Sainsburys 5,000 with 50 new convenience stores and a small number of new supermarkets it is planning to open. Waitrose expansion drive is to create 4,000 new jobs and Iceland is hoping to create 2,500 jobs due to buying 51 stores from former Woolworths.

As unemployment raises so the job market will become more and more competitive.

So until you win that mighty jackpot that will mean you never have to work again LuckyDustBingo have ten top tips when job hunting for you..

1 A well presented CV is essential for landing a new job. It should include details of qualifications, experience and achievements. Your CV should present a picture of you with enough evidence to convince an employer to interview you.

2 Be assertive. When you have sent your CV to someone follow it up with a telephone call to make sure they have received it and try to set up an interview. This shows you really are interested in the position with them. If you dont hear back from them be persistent.

3 Interview questions are increasing becoming about your previous experiences and whether you would fit within the culture of the company. Do your research so you know about the company/role/working environment/dress code. The top five attributes deemed essential by employers are good communication skills, good written English, common sense, a positive attitude and flexibility so hone those skills and sell them to your interviewer.

4 Be aware of your body language. Always start with a firm handshake and a friendly smile. Stay relaxed and maintain eye contact. Make sure you do not fidget. During the interview always be forthcoming when providing information. It may be a good idea to get a member of your friends or family to do a role play interview with you as preparation.

5 When being interviewed ask the interviewer what exactly they are looking for. Ask whether they have any concerns about you and try to accommodate. If you do not meet all of their requirements then be honest about it and try to provide a solution. Always thank the employer for seeing you.

6 If you do not hear from them after the interview or are unsuccessful then ask for feedback or whether they are any other positions opening.

7 Do temporary work. Working with a temp agency may lead to a full time position. Doing temp work is beneficial to both yourself and the employer as it serves as a try before you buy. You get to assess the company and they get to assess you. It will also provide you with experience and further time to plan your next steps.

8 Talk. Talk to everyone you know about their experiences. From their own job hunting experiences to the recruitment process in their current organisation to what their own job is like. Enhance your network and who knows where it may lead.

9 Dont give up and be patience. The average job hunt takes between 2-6 months so prepare for some hard work. Dont beat yourself up if you are not instantly successful. The more effort you put in the more likely you are to land a job that you actually want.

10 Believe in your own capabilities and your ability to do the job. Attitude is everything so you want to try to reach the right level of confidence. You need to be positive and enthusiastic about the position and the company.

There are many places you can get help to kick start your career. Your local centre, library, yellow pages or council should have resources and list of places where you can gain careers advice in your local area.

Jobs may be advertised in your local newspaper, through a recruitment agency, on company websites and online. Dont sign on with just one recruitment agency sign on with as many as you can and be pushy about getting as much information regarding specific jobs as you can.

Apparently one in three people have lied on their CVs to land jobs. Employers are become wise to this and hiring procedures are becoming more strict. It is definitely not recommended that you ever lie in order to try and increase your chances of gaining a job. Be yourself.

If you are smart, creative and persistent you will land that job!

1.Million Dollar Homepage

1000000 pixels, charge a dollar per pixel thats perhaps the dumbest idea for online business anyone could have possible come up with. Still, Alex Tew, a 21-year-old who came up with the idea, is now a millionaire.

What is the idea? (from FAQon the site)

The idea is simple: to try and make $1m (US) by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each. Hence, 'The Million Dollar Homepage". The main motivation for doing this is to pay for my degree studies, because I don't like the idea of graduating with a huge student debt. I know people who are paying off student loans 15-20 years after they graduated. Not a nice thought!
So, everyone is welcome to buy my pixels, which are available in 100-pixel 'blocks' (each measuring 10x10 pixels). You will see the homepage is divided into 10,000 of these 100-pixel blocks (hence there are 1,000,000 pixels in total). The reason for selling them in 100-pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful.
You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available (see the live stats in the top right corner of the page). When you buy some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed.
The pixels you buy will be displayed on the homepage permanently. The homepage will not change. Using some of the money I make from the site, I guarantee to keep it online for at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. I want it to become a kind of internet time capsule. So, in the long run, I believe the pixels will offer good value. You will have a piece of internet history!

2.SantaMail

Ok, hows that for a brilliant idea. Get a postal address at North Pole, Alaska, pretend you are Santa Claus and charge parents 10 bucks for every letter you send to their kids? Well, Byron Reese sent over 200000 letters since the start of the business in 2001, which makes him a couple million dollars richer.

About SantaMail from their site

Since 2002, Santa has been helping us write over 275,000 personalized Christmas letters. Santa makes sure that we use the finest heirloom-quality, acid-free linen paper so that his letters last a lifetime.

As Santa's helpers, we help Santa print his letters and then mail them to him in North Pole, Alaska where he affixes a Christmas stamp on it and sends it on the way to your child. From there, the letter gets postmarked and mailed. (After December 16, he has us mail them directly from Austin, Texas so they reach the children in time!).

3.Doggles

Create goggles for dogs and sell them online? Boy, this IS the dumbest idea for a business. How in the world did they manage to become millionaires and have shops all over the world with that one? Beyond me.

About Doggles from their site

We are famous for Doggles goggles for dogs - the first and only eye protection designed andcreated just for dogs! Seen on CNN,Regis and Kelly, The Today Show, GoodMorning America and many others, they are quite a hit with everyonewho has tried them!We are also an environmentally consciousorganization, using as much "green" orrecycled fabrics and materials in our products aspossible, always keeping in mind that what is goodfor our planet is also good for our pets. Our standards are high, and you will see this in eachand every one of our products. We are market leaders in the design and manufacture oftough and durable and yes, even "green", dog toys. Please be sure to check our offerings in the toy category as you look through our site. Our outdoor line has won the praise of many an outdoor enthusiast as we continue to grow and improve the line. And of course, our fashion sense has never ended as weare alwaysadding and improving to our fashion harness line.We have a wide range of products that are trulyfunctional and have helped many pets over the yearsas we continue to innovate in the pet products field. Asalways, keep an eye on us for more.

4.LaserMonks

LaserMonks.com is a for-profit subsidiary of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank, an eight-monk monastery in the hills of Monroe County, 90 miles northwest of Madison. Yeah, real monks refilling your cartridges. Hallelujah! Their 2005 sales were $2.5 million! Praise the Lord.

5.AntennaBalls

You cant sell antenna ball online. There is no way. And surely it wouldnt make you rich. But this is exactly what Jason Wall did, and now he is now a millionaire.

6.FitDeck

Create a deck of cards featuring exercise routines, and sell it online for $18.95. Sounds like a disaster idea to me. But former Navy SEAL and fitness instructor Phil Black reported last year sales of $4.7 million. Surely beats what military pays.

7.PositivesDating.Com

How would you like to go on a date with an HIV positive person? Paul Graves and Brandon Koechlin thought that someone would, so they created a dating site for HIV positive folks last year. Projected 2006 sales are $110,000, and the two hope to have 50,000 members by their two-year mark.

8.Designer Diaper Bags

Christie Rein was tired of carrying diapers around in a freezer bag. The 34-year-old mother of three found herself constantly stuffing diapers for her infant son into freezer bags to keep them from getting scrunched up in her purse. Rein wanted something that was compact, sleek and stylish, so in November 2004, she sat down with her husband, Marcus, who helped her design a custom diaper bag that's big enough to hold a travel pack of wipes and two to four diapers. With more than $180,000 in sales for 2005, Christie's company, Diapees & Wipees, has bags in 22 different styles, available online and in 120 boutiques across the globe for $14.99.

9.PickyDomains

Hire another person to think of a cool domain name for you? No way people would pay for this. Actually, naming domain names for others turned out a thriving business, especially, when you make the entire process risk free. PickyDomains currently has a waiting list of people who want to PAY the service to come up with a snappy memorable domain name. PickyDomains is expected to hit six figures this year.

10.Lucky Wishbone Co.

Fake wishbones. Now, this stupid idea is just destined to flop. Who in the world needs FAKE PLASTIC wishbones? A lot of people, it turns out. Now producing 30,000 wishbones daily (they retail for 3 bucks a pop) Ken Ahroni, the company founder, expects 2006 sales to reach $1 million.

There are more than 2.9 million registered nurses in the country, making nursing the largest healthcare profession. Nurses work in their discount urbane scrubs wherever people need care: in hospitals, schools, homes, community centers, workplaces, homeless shelters, children's camp, retirement communities, and so on. A little over 50% of registered nurses work in hospitals and the rest work in various settings. An estimate of 14.9% work in public health or community health, 11.5% in ambulatory care, 6.3% in nursing homes, and 2.6% in nursing education. Hospital unit settings are also varied including emergency rooms, intensive care, operating room, recovery room, step-down, outpatient units, a labor and delivery. Full-time staff nurses who work in hospitals have a median salary of about $56,880. Indeed, nursing is a very attractive career option, especially since it is predicted that there will be an increasing demand for nurses in the next 20 years; but still, it is not for everyone.

What makes a good nurse?

Before considering a career in nursing, you should assess yourself and determine if nursing is right for you-if you have the personality, skills, and ability to be a nurse. If you are naturally compassionate, love helping other people, and really want to make a difference in other people's lives then this line of work is perfect for you. It will also help a good deal if you are hardworking, passionate, and analytical-particularly if you pay attention to small details to get some clues about a person's general behavior, then nursing is a very viable career path for you.

What sucks about being a nurse?

Nursing is a high-intensity job where there is little to no idle time. For those who are easily stressed, they might experience burn-out early and be unable to handle the pressures of the job. Because there is a shortage of nurses, all nursing staff are maximized and utilized to the full of their abilities. As a nurse, you will be working in odd hours and assigned various shifts. Your schedule will be erratic and it could mean a significant decrease in your social life. You will be likely working during hours when your friends of family are off work. You may also be required to work weekends, week nights, and holidays. Even if you have a 40-hour workweek, you may not see your friends, family, spouse, or lover, that much. Also, nurses are usually requested even pressured to work over-time especially when there are too many patients and new admissions. Another downside is that you will be working in an environment that can generally be depressing. You will be surrounded with sick or dying people and their aggrieved families. Needless to say, a hospital environment can be high on emotions. You need to be able to deal with serious issues and communicating these with other people without breaking down.

Compensation

One of the best things about being a nurse is that you are compensated well for your hard work and efforts. The average compensation for registered nurses is between $43,000 and $63,000 per year, while the top 10% of high-paid nurses are earning more than $75,000 per year.

Help answer the question about urban jobs

Is there a math formula that urban planners use in their job?
This is for my school project, and is painstaking to find on search engines because of all the advertisements and irrelevant links. So if there are any urban planners out there willing to tell me a math formula that you use in your job and how it is applied, it would be highly appreciated! (:
Also, since I believe there are many math formulas urban planners have to consider in their jobs, please tell me a formula understandable by high schoolers.
Thanks !

Help answer the question about urban jobs

Community Planning and Urban Studies jobs?
I have a question about Community Planning/Urban Studies.

I already graduated college with a BA in Mass Communications and dual minors with Philosophy/Communication Management. The way the economy is, I am really struggling finding a solid career right now. I am likely going to have to defer my loans, which means building more interest. So I started to think more seriously about grad school...

I mean I know I want to go to grad school, and if I am going to have to defer my loans I may as well further my education at the same time, right?

So, I have been looking into this local college, and they have a Community Planning and Urban Studies Masters program. It sounds very interesting, and I think I would do well since I already understand Public Relations from my BA.

However, is this job marketable? What kind of jobs could I get with a Masters in Community Planning/Urban Studies?

Any information on this would be great. Thanks.

Regina Edwards is a 40 year old Black woman with 6 children who has lived in north Minneapolis for the last 6 years. Regina is dying of Pancreatic Cancer. The doctors say they cannot operate. 2 out 10 people get this cancer but by the time it's diagnosed, it's too late. In the mix of it all her furnace is not working, her house is cold, and she has no food in her refrigerator due to her electricity being cut off. As we speak, (during this interview) she's getting ready to go to chemotherapy at North Memorial Hospital. There is no one but her 18 year old daughter to take care of the siblings. No relatives, no grandparents...no one.

Regina has been a political activist and worked at the Urban League of Greater Madison and the City of Madison. She also has worked for the International Culinary School in Burnsville, Minnesota and graduated from Minneapolis Community Technical College in May with a degree in Culinary Arts. Regina's path to education, wealth and independence was tracking in the right direction.

But there's a lot more to Regina's story. Besides having her new home robbed by the people who lived there before, after the landlord gave her the key without changing the locks the day before Thanksgiving, there has been a list of events that have happened to Regina that she needs to let out. So let's start with the Minneapolis Urban League. Regina says she knew things where strange at the Minneapolis Urban League when the leadership was like, "the Pink Panther," says Ms. Edwards, "These people don't want to address any issue other than their paychecks. They creep around as if they are invisible."

Regina said, "I'm tired of fighting. From the social workers at the hospital to Section 8 - there was no one available at the Minneapolis Urban League to address, assist, or advise me on what to do and how a dying mother can get assistance for herself and her children in a true time of need." As I talk to her tonight, her young daughter wants to use the computer to do homework - but Regina says to her daughter, "You can't plug the computer in when the heaters are plugged in because the fuse will blow in the basement." Regina, doesn't like going in the basement that has flooded this summer and is filled with mold. She has 4 of the children sleep in the bed with her to keep warm.

Regina did go to the Minneapolis Urban League to seek help and counseling services from Dr. Brovada who has a "boot camp" at the Minneapolis Urban League that helps families. Because of Regina's list of issues, Ms. Edwards says, "It was a laugh; we had so much going on that they never called back. I even called when I was in the hospital, still no response."

Regina was first diagnosed with Cancer on August 2, 2008 and went through an unsuccessful surgery; she sought help from the Minneapolis Urban League for her and her children which fell on deaf ears. Meantime her 15 year old daughter took a liking to skipping school and hanging out at the Minneapolis Urban League. Regina's 15 year old daughter, a runaway was allegedly welcomed into one of the men's homes whooperate out of the MUL.Now the 15 year old is 1 1/2 months pregnant (allegedly) by a 19 year old that has told the mother (Regina), "She's just 15, she can get an abortion." Ms. Edwards says, "My daughter will not have an abortion! These people at the Minneapolis Urban League who smile in my face are the same ones responsible for my daughter getting pregnant. It's a shame that the janitor at the Minneapolis Urban League knew my daughter was pregnant before I did. Where is the process for accountability?"

Regina goes on to say, "I have asked everyone at the Minneapolis Urban League to help me after my money was gone." she asked, "What programs you have that I can be a part of to help keep my family together." The only one that has shown any compassion or caring towards me was a couple of really nice ladies at the front desk. The men at the Urban League to include the local pastors that associate themselves with the MUL, Regina says, "I wouldn't trust to bury me when I die." Ms. Edwards was speaking about a fund that was to be set up to assist her and the children during this hard time. It has been alleged that there was monies collected that never got to Ms. Edwards.

Regina also says, "No one over north (Minneapolis) wants to be accountable for anything in the community. They all just worry about themselves. If the Minneapolis Urban League truly served the people of north Minneapolis, we would have more jobs, better schools, programs that worked and a future different than mine, which ultimately will be death!"

Doctors at North Memorial and Hennepin County Medical Center say that the cancer that Regina has in some cases can be avoided through exercise, healthy eating, nutritional education and a responsible community awareness of health disparities in the Black community. With all respect, this should be addressed by local social service agencies by partnering with local Universities and Hospitals to raise top-of-mind awareness to illnesses that affect the Black community more so than the mainstream; in some cases attributed to unhealthy diets, lack of food sources (food bank) and no money to make healthy choices. The Social Wellness Cluster at the Minneapolis Urban League has received dollars to address such issues on a monumental level but with the lack of leadership and process the message is muted to a quite whisper with no successful measurable results. "It's not about catered parties at the Minneapolis Urban League to increase awareness about an illness; we need boots on the ground going door-to-door to engage the Black community. Those people act like they are too good to serve the people" says Ms. Edwards.

Is the University of Minnesota-North Side Partnership or UROC really the answer north Minneapolis needs? It's been almost a year since a University and an Anthropologist ascended on north Minneapolis with all the grace of a Messiah. Still no one has address the high unemployment rates, no economic stimuli and the static feel of a blighted community. Also having the opportunity to meet with Dr. Robert Jones, D. Craig Taylor and Dr. Irma McClurin from the University of Minnesota we still don't have a healthy source of food distribution like a co-op on the north side which they talked about with high hopes earlier this year.

The story continues. The Minneapolis Urban League has lost touch with the community. In a random survey taken on the corners of Penn Avenue and Plymouth Avenue in front of the Minneapolis Urban League, 20 people ages from 18 to 65 were asked two questions:

1. What does the Minneapolis Urban League do?

2. Who is the President of the Minneapolis Urban League?

Not one person knew what happens inside the piece of real estate sitting on the corners of Penn and Plymouth Avenue North orwho the President was.Of course the people had an idea on what the agency should be doing - that's a whole other story...soon to come.

What comes to mind is, where the leaders of the community are? Furthermore, where are the civil rights leaders? Take note, on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 a 25 year old Black man from Minneapolis named Quincy Smith was tazered to death by Minneapolis Police at 1035 Knox Avenue North...no Black organizations said a word. Reports allege he had a bad heart.

No one deserves to die like that - no matter what the circumstances were.

Last Friday at a community meeting I was asked why I went after the Black social service agencies so hard and why don't I attack some "White people." My answer to this person who sits on the Minneapolis Urban League Board was simple. I said, "I don't get thousands of dollars each year from the Minneapolis Urban League for advertising. I never got dollars from Northway Community Trust or NRRC. By the wa
y - have you signed the Conflict of Interest statement yet?"

"Black peoplewho work at social service agencies in north Minneapolis that have put themselves in the positions of helping people have to "step up." No longer will the mainstream tolerate Black organizations that claim stupidity and having no money to complete missions but serve themselves at the highest levels, wanting for nothing.

The innocence of not knowing about what is going on in the Black community doesn't fly after today.

There's a Black president!

Nursing is a very stressful, hectic, and intense job; it is no wonder that a lot of new nurses get burned out easily. There are a lot of things that adds to the stressfulness of the hospital environment, particularly the nursing job, such as hospital protocol, staffing shortages, corporate rules, unpleasant co-workers, unreasonable superiors, competitiveness, clashing egos, insecurities, lack of sleep, and lack of confidence. For the new nurse in discount urbane scrubs, it can be impossible to handle the overwhelming pressures and stresses that come with the job and it is easy to feel miserable within a few months or a year's time. Feeling disillusioned is a common reaction for the newbie where they start hating work and dread waking up everyday and going to the hospital. It is as if their only sustenance has become waiting for the paycheck. In no time, misery leads to depression and depression leads to fatigue and illness and the feeling that you need to quit to get your life back. This is what 'burnout' is.

One way to overcome burnout is to treat it like any other illness. And like any other illness, the first step to treating it is to recognize what it is and make an assessment and diagnosis. This means that the first step to cure burnout is to recognize that you have burnout. You need to have self-awareness. Some symptoms of burnout include feeling that every day is a bad day, feeling bored all the time, not caring about your work anymore and feel that it's waste of time to think about it, feeling exhausted all the time, and spending your time on tasks that you find mind-numbingly dull or too overwhelming, and feeling that anything that you do will make no difference and will go unappreciated. Burnout from work also usually spills out into your personal life and home life. It can also lower your immune system and make you susceptible to flu, headaches, or a cold.

Once you have made a diagnosis of yourself and have confirmed that you are indeed experiencing burnout, it's time to act on it to reverse its effects. To battle the symptoms, you have to work on your mental and physical state. You can feel and be more energetic by taking up a physical exercise, specifically cardio. You can try jogging to work or signing up for a Pilates, yoga, aerobics, or dancing class. All of these will help you breathe better, make your blood circulate better, and strengthen your immune system. Eating healthy will also contribute to a healthy body. And as you've learned, a healthy body affects a healthy mind.

Making changes in your routine is one way to break the dull and mundane cycle of your daily work. You can start with little changes such as eating in a different place or ordering other types of food that you don't usually order. Try to be a bit more adventurous! Listening to music is also very therapeutic. You can listen to ambient music during your break times, or on your way home, or before going to bed. These are just some examples for battling burnout. Reading poetry, being inspired by art, finding beauty in humanity-all these are tools for making you love yourself and your work again.
